Winter Skincare
Hi lovely people,
Generally, during winter we tend to spend more time indoors with fires or heaters on. Add in the cold, outside air and the result is dry and damaged skin.
Harsh winter weather strips the skin of its natural oils leading to dryness and dehydration. Long, hot baths and showers as well as using soap, significantly contribute to stripping the skin’s barrier.
Lipid Dry Skin has very little oil and tends to look dull, rough and flakey while dehydrated skin is tight and shows fine lines. This is the type of skin that often reacts to changes in seasons.
Ensuring that the skin’s barrier is functioning properly is an excellent way to prevent dry/dehydrated skin. Good barrier function reduces trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), lowers inflammation, and keeps pathogens and other irritants out of the skin.
To help combat winter dryness and dehydration, use products that replenish the skin’s natural sebum production and preserve the skin’s barrier.
Always opt for oils that mimic skin’s natural sebum, such as Jojoba, Rosehip or Ximenia oil.
It’s important to avoid using mineral oil on the skin as this type of oil adds no nutritional value to the skin and simply forms an occlusive layer over the skin. It is also very comedogenic.
Winter Skincare Tips
- Switch to a gentle cream or milk cleanser and cleanse your skin just once a day at night. In the mornings, rinse your face with warm water. I love the Esse Sensitive Cleanser for winter.
- For optimal hydration, try using a richer moisturiser. I highly recommend trying the Esse Omega Moisturisers, as they deliver high levels of Omegas to the skin, resulting in a soft and smooth complexion.
- Remember to incorporate an oil into your skincare routine. You can apply the oil before your moisturizer or mix a few drops into your moisturizer or foundation. Personally, I enjoy adding a drop of oil to my foundation for a natural, radiant look. My favourite oil is Esse Protect Oil, which forms a protective barrier over the skin to reduce dehydration and sensitivity.
- Avoid using very hot water on your face or body, as it can strip the skin by melting the sebum and disturbing the skin’s barrier.
- Make sure to use a cream mask twice a week. For added nourishment, you can even leave the Esse Cream Mask on your skin overnight.
- Combat dry, winter skin confidently with our Esse Experience Facial.
Schedule an appointment and discover how Esse can rejuvenate and rewild your skin. We also stock the full Esse Probotic Skincare range.
Until next time.
